In our rapidly changing world, the fate of our planet hinges not solely on the innovative solutions we devise but also significantly on the capacity of young people to question, challenge, and reimagine existing norms and paradigms. This generation is uniquely positioned to scrutinize the status quo, encouraging a culture of inquiry that is essential for tackling the multifaceted challenges posed by climate change and environmental degradation. By prioritizing the act of asking the right questions rather than merely providing definitive answers, we create a fertile ground for important conversations that can inspire and galvanize deeper engagement with climate issues among communities, policymakers, and stakeholders alike.
Such inquiries can lead to a broader understanding of the interconnectedness of social, economic, and environmental factors, fostering a holistic approach to sustainability. When young individuals engage in dialogue that questions traditional practices and assumptions, they not only illuminate the flaws in current systems but also pave the way for innovative ideas and solutions that may have previously been overlooked. This principle of inquiry and critical thinking forms the very foundation of the SDGs Intelligence Project, an initiative that has already begun to make a significant impact in countries such as Austria, Latvia, and Slovenia.
The SDGs Intelligence Project is designed to empower youth by equipping them with the tools and knowledge necessary to engage with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). By cultivating a mindset of exploration and critical analysis, the project encourages young people to delve deeper into the implications of these goals, examining how they relate to their local contexts and global challenges. This initiative not only promotes awareness but also fosters a sense of responsibility and agency among youth, motivating them to become active participants in the pursuit of sustainable development.
Furthermore, the project facilitates workshops, discussions, and collaborative activities that enable young people to voice their concerns and propose actionable solutions to pressing environmental issues. By creating platforms for dialogue, the SDGs Intelligence Project nurtures a community of young changemakers who are committed to advocating for policies and practices that prioritize ecological integrity and social equity. The impact of such initiatives extends beyond individual empowerment; it has the potential to influence broader societal shifts, encouraging communities and governments to embrace more sustainable practices and policies.
In essence, the SDGs Intelligence Project exemplifies the critical role that youth engagement plays in the ongoing fight against climate change. By fostering a culture of inquiry and challenging existing norms, we not only enhance our understanding of environmental issues but also inspire a generation that is ready to lead the charge toward a more sustainable and equitable future.
🎯 What is SDGs Intelligence About?
Funded by the Erasmus+ programme and led by Ecological Future Education (EFE), the SDGs Intelligence project stems from a key belief: young people need better tools to understand, question, and respond to sustainability challenges.
Traditional education around the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) often relies heavily on presentations and vague slogans, leaving many students feeling disheartened. For instance, studies show that when education is passive, like lectures, students retain only 10-20% of the information presented. This bottom-line statistic underscores the need for a better approach.
That is where the SDGs Intelligence project stands out. It employs the innovative SDGs Cards Box as a “conversation engine,” transforming the way sustainability is taught.

The box comprises over 70 carefully designed cards, each inviting young people to engage in purposeful dialogue about the 17 SDGs. These cards encourage reflection, debate, and the exploration of solutions through ecological, social, and economic perspectives. Each card features critical questions and data-driven prompts that facilitate deeper discussions.
Additionally, the SDGs Intelligence project provides a detailed practical guide for youth workers, ensuring educators and mentors have the resources and knowledge needed to maximize these conversations.
Creating Critical Conversations
One of the most impressive features of the SDGs Cards Box is its ability to foster critical discussions. When given the chance to talk about pressing climate issues, youth become more engaged and proactive in finding solutions.
In pilot workshops for the project, participants shared transformative experiences. For example, many indicated that their conversations shifted from superficial complaints to profound discussions about how actions in their communities can lead to global impact. This shift is vital; a survey revealed that 80% of participants felt more empowered to make positive changes after engaging in meaningful dialogue.
Creating a safe space for these discussions is essential in today’s fast-paced world. The SDGs Cards Box helps break down communication barriers, providing a platform for individuals to express diverse viewpoints and collaborate on innovative solutions.
Renewed Climate Engagement
The benefits of asking the right questions instead of handing out answers are significant. As youth engage in dialogue, they ignite renewed climate interest not only within their circles but also in their larger communities.
By encouraging inquiry over ready-made solutions, the SDGs Intelligence project empowers participants to take ownership of their understanding and actions concerning sustainability. Feedback shows that, after workshops, over 75% of participants felt more equipped to advocate for change in their communities.
These workshops and conversations arm youth with essential knowledge and skills to articulate their concerns effectively. With this foundation, they are better prepared to engage with peers, local policymakers, and community organizations, amplifying their voices in the broader climate conversation.
The Ripple Effect
Engaging youth in critical discussions leads to a far-reaching ripple effect: awareness that surpasses individual workshops or communities. Each conversation becomes part of a bigger network of informed advocates who can influence change.
What begins as a small group discussion can evolve into something larger as engaged youth share their insights. The SDGs Intelligence project champions the interconnectedness of community and environmental issues, encouraging participants to view themselves as integral to the solution.
Consider young individuals spreading their knowledge at schools, local events, or social initiatives, motivating others to join sustainability discussions. This united effort cultivates widespread support for sustainable practices and policies, influencing not only local communities but also contributing to broader societal change.
The Path Forward
As the SDGs Intelligence project continues to grow across Europe, its mission to equip young people with the right questions can transform discussions about sustainability. By emphasizing inquiry instead of answers, we are nurturing a generation of critical thinkers ready to tackle our planet's challenges.
The journey of SDGs Intelligence is just beginning, and the initial outcomes are promising. With each workshop, conversation, and question raised, we are igniting a passion for sustainability that extends well beyond the immediate context.

In a world that can often seem overwhelming, the SDGs Intelligence project offers hope. By encouraging critical dialogues, we not only equip young people with the tools needed to envision a better tomorrow but also create a resilient network of advocates who can drive sustainable change for generations.
Let us keep asking the right questions and work together toward a sustainable future. Remember, the journey toward sustainability starts with a single conversation.

"I always thought sustainability was something far away — for governments or scientists. But through this project, I realized how connected it is to my everyday life. The cards helped me think about things I never questioned before.” - A participant review.

This international project was successfully realised thanks to the generous support of the Latvian ERASMUS+ National Agency of the Erasmus+ Programme of the European Union, and coordinated by the Latvian organisation "Biedrība Ecological Future Education" and hosted by EMOTIC.
More project details are on the ERASMUS+ results platform in its Project Card.
